Anshei Israel hires religious school administrator

Sarah artzi

The Anshei Israel Congregation has appointed Sarah Artzi as the interim administrator of the religious school. In this new role, Artzi will oversee the day-to-day operations of the school and its teachers.

Born and raised in Tucson, Artzi is a life member of CAI. Daughter of Sue and the late Saul Tobin (Saul was instrumental in securing ownership of 5th Street and Craycroft Road for the current CAI Synagogue). Graduated from Brandeis University with a BA in Judaic Studies, she began to get involved in Jewish life early on. She attended the then nursery / kindergarten, religious school and United Synagogue Youth; attended and worked at Camp Ramah; and worked in several Jewish agencies in New York and San Diego after college, returning to Tucson after getting married. Artzi and her husband, Jeff, have three children who all attended CAI Kindergarten / Kindergarten, where she was active on the Parents’ Action Committee. She and her children all became B’nai Mitzvot at CAI.

“I knew CAI before I knew ABC,” says Artzi. “Jewish life is rooted in me, and it all started in Anshei Israel. I occupy this position with several hats: as a mother, as a devotee, as a teacher of a religious school and as a member of this community. It really feels like a natural, comfortable progression and a wonderful fit. I love the synagogue and am excited to add this new role.

Rabbi Robert Eisen comments, “I look forward to working with Sarah and am delighted with what she will bring to our school as we build on the strong tradition of excellence for which our school is known. Her commitment and references, and above all, her contagious smile, will allow us to continue to build the warm and caring community that is synonymous with CAI.

Artzi will work alongside Eisen and CAI’s new cantorial soloist Nichole Chorny. According to Artzi, she and Chorny are “initiates” of the religious school, which should allow a smooth transition for the students and their parents. “Nichole and I will hopefully provide a sense of familiarity and comfort to our families. We also look forward to creating a strong sense of community and connection within our school.”
