The Hungarian Army Modernization Institute on Tuesday signed a cooperation agreement with John von Neumann University and the Diana Weapons Engineering Business School to advance the development of a Hungarian family of weapons fist, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Gáspár Maróth, Hungarian government commissioner for defense industry development, said the handgun family received favorable feedback from industry professionals during the testing phase. The second phase of weapons development will be to make them cost-effective to manufacture, suitable for mass production and attractive in international markets, he added.

Ongoing research in materials technology at Neumann Janos University could give handguns a “serious competitive edge,” Maróth said.

He added that the handgun project has the full support of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.
