Text description provided by the architects. The new building of the canteen and the media library is located in the immediate vicinity of the North Professional School Center which we have just restructured and with which it delimits a common forecourt. A key element for addressing the campus, it defines the conditions for entering the site. It is designed as a free-standing two-story building with a square footprint.

The floor plan, rotated 45 degrees, is based on an overall structuralist concept comprising a three by three meter square grid. With its wooden supporting structure, its bent glass fronts and its perforated black corrugated sheet cladding, the canteen has an open and elegant appearance.

A cafeteria with a patio and the media center as well as seminar and office rooms for the adult education center are located on the ground floor. A sculpturally curved staircase in the center of the building leads to the upper floor, which contains the canteen with its service area and a dining room that can accommodate around 300 diners.

The supporting structure shapes the impression of space. It consists of an orthogonal grid of glued laminated timber beams that follow a three by three meter grid. This dimension constitutes the basic module of the global structuralist concept. Each module is associated with a seating group that includes a table and six chairs as a reference size. This creates a space that promotes communication and has a dining room character.

The entire geometry of the floor plan is rotated 45 degrees from the edges of the building, resulting in the jagged outline. The concept of materials – with wood, exposed concrete, glass and metal surfaces – allows a high-end and pleasant atmosphere to manifest itself throughout. Wraparound balconies provide additional outdoor seating.
