Shimla, November 2

A seven-member team from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited the University of Himachal Pradesh (HPU) today for a physical verification of the self-assessment report submitted by the university.

The team, which is led by Arun K Pujari and includes Santa Ram Joshi, Telagam Chetty Tripura Sundari, Vijaya Bhaskar Raju K, Ajitava Raychaudhuri, Balabhim Biradar and Krishnan Krishnan, is on a three-day visit to HPU.

It will assess the university’s performance based on curriculum, faculty, infrastructure, e-governance, research and patents, and teaching best practices.

The team inspected the departments of Sanskrit, English, History, Visual Arts, Business, Tribal Studies, Journalism, Professional Studies, Geography, Biotechnology, Physics, Mathematics , chemistry, Hindi and sociology. The assessment is based on a 70% self-assessment report and a 30% physical assessment.

After a National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) downgrade last year, HPU management had issued instructions to all departments to fill in gaps and rectify deficiencies to improve the NAAC rating from A to A+.

One of the reasons why HPU achieved A grade was to become the first university in the country to implement the semester system under Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan. However, the state government and the university reverted to the annual examination system, creating several problems for students and other stakeholders.

Performance criteria

  • The team will evaluate performance based on curriculum, faculty, infrastructure, e-governance, research and patents, etc.
  • After a drop in the NIRF rating last year, the HPU asked its departments to rectify the discrepancies to improve the rating from A to A+
