The North South University Law Department, in order to create extracurricular opportunities for law students and highlight the importance of legal research, recently hosted an undergraduate law symposium in the fall of 2021. This event took place on December 23, 2021 but the article submission started one month before the event.

Law students from public and private universities and across the country submitted their research papers on various legal topics. Topics ranged from criminal and civil law, to alternative dispute resolution and even parts of public international law. Approximately 20 article submissions were received and these articles were reviewed by a committee of faculty from the North South University Department of Law. Finally, five papers were shortlisted to be presented to our prestigious panel of judges. The jury included Prof. Dr. Sarkar Ali Akkas, Dean, Faculty of Law, Jagannath University, Mr. Mohammad Golam Sarwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Dhaka University and Mr. Md. Mostafa Hossain, Assistant Professor, Faculty of right. , University of Brac. The judges were very impressed with the presentations given by the five shortlisted finalists and constantly asked them curious questions regarding their presentation. The event was also honored by the guest of honor, Professor Dr Abdur Rob Khan, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at North South University. The five shortlisted participants were Sayere Nazabi Sayem, Mohammad Minhazur Rahman Sabit, Anika Anjum Meher, Nadim Zawad Akil and Md. Rakibul Hasan Ron.

The top 3 participants were Md. Rakibul Hasan Roni from the Bangladesh Professional University (BUP) who was crowned champion, Mohammad Minhazur Rahman Sabit who became the 1st finalist from Jahangirnagar University and Anika Anjum Meher from the University de Brac who became the 2nd finalist. They received badges, certificates and a nominal fee for becoming the champion, 1st finalist and 2nd finalist of the Fall 2021 Undergraduate Law Symposium. The opening session speech was delivered by Dr Md. Rizwanul Islam, Professor and Chairman, Department of Law, North South University. Ms. Nasmin Jabin Noor, Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, North South University thanked the participants, laureates and distinguished guests. Gianni Mahsina Haque, Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, Department of Law, served as emcee for this session. The session took place in the mock courtroom at North South University and was broadcast live on the Department of Law’s Facebook page. Many law students from the department were introduced during the session as observers. The department director also expressed his gratitude to the teaching assistants of the law department and wished to organize such programs in the near future on a regular basis.
