Vocational school students start the test phase of the ŠKODA AFRIQ Apprentice Car

Mladá Boleslav, February 10, 2022 – The ŠKODA AFRIQ apprenticeship car is taking shape: After having largely completed the construction of the eighth ŠKODA apprenticeship car, the 25 apprentices of the current project year at the vocational school ŠKODA are now starting the test phase. The presentation of the ŠKODA AFRIQ is scheduled for spring 2022.

The 25 apprentices of the ŠKODA Vocational School in Mladá Boleslav have taken the next step, having almost completed the construction of the ŠKODA AFRIQ. The eighth ŠKODA Apprentice Car commemorates the legendary Dakar Rally and is the first to be created in collaboration with ŠKODA Motorsport since the launch of this long-standing initiative. Testing is now beginning on the spectacular rally variant of the KAMIQ urban SUV before the unique vehicle is presented to the media and public this spring. The name AFRIQ, chosen by students in vocational training, also indicates the responsibility of ŠKODA AUTO for all activities of the Volkswagen group in North Africa, the cradle of the “Dakar”.

“We’ve been working hard over the last few months and it’s great to finally be in front of the car. Working with the various departments of ŠKODA and the experts from ŠKODA Motorsport has been a fantastic experience that we will carry with us into our professional lives. Now we can’t wait for test drives with the ŠKODA AFRIQ and we can’t wait to see how the vehicle will perform on the road,” says Anna Střížková.

To make the eighth ŠKODA Apprentice Car suitable for off-road use, the vocational training students integrated the transmission of a ŠKODA OCTAVIA 4×4 into the chassis of the AFRIQ. Experts from ŠKODA Motorsport provided their technical expertise for the rally-specific interior equipment. In the concept car, passengers sit on racing seats from the famous ŠKODA FABIA Rally2 evo, equipped with five-point seat belts. The students of the vocational school have once again transformed the eighth ŠKODA learner car into a truly unique vehicle with many new and unusual ideas. The initiative testifies to the high quality of training at the vocational school in Mladá Boleslav, founded in 1927. Alongside their teachers, apprentices traditionally receive support from engineers and employees from the fields of technical development, design and production and, for the first time in the current project, ŠKODA Motorsport.

Zdeněk Stanke, Team Leader at the ŠKODA Academy, says: “Seeing the ŠKODA Apprentice Car gradually come to life is always exciting. To see the almost finished ŠKODA AFRIQ now – as teachers we appreciate this moment just as much as the students. I am delighted with the attention the apprentices and teachers have given to the details of this vehicle. Inside, you feel like you’re in a professional rally car, waiting for the starting signal for the next stage.
